At Annam Farms, we are dedicated to the holistic well-being of our native cows, firmly believing that happy, stress-free cows produce the healthiest milk. Unlike conventional dairy farms that often confine cows, we advocate for natural behaviours and environments that promote optimal health.
Our cows are encouraged to roam freely under the sun daily, allowing them to instinctively select from a variety of herbs and grasses, many of which serve as natural medicines. This practice not only provides essential nutrients but also supports their innate foraging behaviours. The term "Kaal Nadai" in Tamil, meaning animals that walk extensively, reflects this natural behaviour. Confining cows, even if untied, restricts their movement and access to diverse forage, which can negatively impact their well-being.
During grazing, our cows typically walk 4 to 5 kilometres a day. This regular exercise promotes physical health and ensures they remain stress-free. Research supports our approach, indicating that cows with access to pasture exhibit better health outcomes, including reduced lameness and lower stress levels. For instance, studies have shown that pasture access prevents and reduces the incidence of lameness, improves behavioural parameters by allowing the expression of natural behaviours, and enhances overall welfare by increasing resistance to diseases and stimulating reproductive functions.
Regular exposure to sunlight is vital for their overall well-being, contributing to the production of high-quality milk.
Beyond grazing, our cows are supplemented with organically grown fodder such as Super Napier, Veli Masal, Kudirai Masal, and paddy straw. We also provide nutrient-rich supplements like groundnut oil cake, coconut oil cake, and gingelly oil cake, ensuring a balanced diet that supports their health and milk production. Our commitment to organic farming means that the fodder is free from synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, promoting both animal health and environmental sustainability.
At Annam Farms, we support natural breeding by maintaining healthy bulls that naturally mate with cows during grazing periods. This approach respects the cows' natural reproductive behaviours and contributes to the birth of robust calves, aligning with our commitment to ethical and sustainable farming practices. By prioritizing natural breeding, we enhance the genetic diversity and overall health of our herd.
We ensure that calves receive adequate nutrition by allowing them to feed from their mothers before any milking is done. This practice supports the calves' growth and development while maintaining the natural bond between mother and offspring. Additionally, for the first ten days, calves feed exclusively on their mother's milk, after which they are gradually introduced to nutrient-rich porridge made from powdered maize and ragi, ensuring a smooth transition to solid foods. By adhering to these principles, Annam Farms fosters a humane and sustainable environment that benefits our cows and ensures the production of pure, high-quality milk for our customers.
